ousgoodsaremainlymineraloilsandproductsofthe

chemicalindustrywhichmayrepresentadangerforthecrew,s

beentakenaccountbytheIMOintheinternationalConventionfortheSafetyofLifeatSea,SOLAS.

ThecarriageofdangerousgoodsingeneralisdealtwithinSOLASChapterVII,coveringchemical

tankersinPartB,gascarriersinPartCandthecarriageofdangerousgoodsinpackagedformorin

solicforminbulkiscontainedinPartA.

PartAofSOLASChapterVIIcontainsgeneralrequirementscoveringmainlyoperationalaspects

andappliestoallships,includingcargoshipesoflessthan500grosstons,carryingdangerous

fSOLASChapterVIIisthelegalbaseforthe“InternationalMaritimeDangerous

GoodsCode“(IMDGCode)andthe“CodeofSafetyPracticeforSolidBulkCargoes“(BCCode).

Therecodescontainthespecificrequirementswithregardtopacking,labelling,stowage,

segregationandotheroperationalaspects.

dangerouscargo,itmustbedisconnectedandcapableofbeingsafeguardedagainst

connectiondeviceistobelocatedoutsidethe

hazardousareaandshould,forinstance,includelockableswitchesinitsdesign.

ThereasonforthisspecialarrangementarethatarrangementsexistedintheBalticSeapriorto

entryintoforce(1984)ofSOLAS,Regulation54alreadyandthatsomeofthedistancecoveredby

thevesselsareveryshort,sothatrail/roadtraffic(RIDandADR)hadtobetakenintoaccounttoa

romdetailedspecialprovisionsforpassengerandcargovessels(prohibitionof

certainsubstances)andregulationsforstowageonandbelowdeck,inclosedandopenholds,

requirementshavebeenlaiddownforexplosionprotectionofelectricalequipment,providingforat

least20changesofairperhourduringloadingandunloadingoperationsandduringvoyage.

Simplifiedexplosionprotectionofelectricalequipment,asagainstthemeasuresrequiredtobe

takensubjecttoSOLASreg.54,

measureisalsoreferredtoasprimaryexplosionprotection.

Inspecificcases,whichcannotbedealtwith,explosionprotectionofelectricalequipmentis

requiredthroughoutthefullheightofthehold;inothercasesitissufficienttoprovideexplosion

protectionuptoaheightof45cm,whileabovethatheightprovisionsaremadeforlimited

explosionprotection(measuresforextendedhazardousareas).
