Objective:
The objective of this interactive IELTS Listening teaching plan is to enhance students'
listening skills, improve their familiarity with different types of accents and topics, and help
them develop effective strategies for handling all sections of the IELTS Listening test.
I. Introduction to the IELTS Listening Test (20 minutes)
A. Brief overview of the IELTS Listening test format and scoring
B. Discussion on the importance of listening skills in everyday life and academic settings
C. Sharing personal experiences or challenges in listening comprehension
II. Pre-Listening Activities (30 minutes)
A. Warm-up activity: Pictionary
- Students draw and guess words related to different topics (e.g., education, travel,
environment) to activate prior knowledge and vocabulary
B. Predicting strategies:
1. Students examine the multiple-choice questions or completion tasks for the upcoming
listening task.
2. They predict possible answers based on keywords, context, or background knowledge.
3. Discussion of prediction strategies and examples of successful predictions
III. Listening Practice - Section 1 (30 minutes)
A. Introduction to Section 1:
1. Explanation of the format and task types.
2. Emphasis on understanding the purpose, location, and speakers involved in Section 1.
B. Guided practice and modeling:
1. Teacher models active listening techniques (e.g., note-taking, underline keywords,
identify synonyms) using a sample Section 1 recording.
2. Students practice active listening techniques in pairs or small groups.
3. Class discussion on effective strategies and challenges encountered during the practice.
IV. Listening Practice - Section 2 (30 minutes)
A. Introduction to Section 2:
1. Explanation of the format and task types.
2. Highlighting the differences in speaker speed, accent, and style compared to Section 1.
B. Guided practice and modeling:
1. Teacher models active listening techniques using a sample Section 2 recording.
2. Students practice with a partner using another Section 2 practice recording.
3. Debriefing: sharing difficulties faced and effective strategies used during the practice.
V. Listening Practice - Section 3 (30 minutes)
A. Introduction to Section 3:
1. Explanation of the format and task types.
2. Discussion on the increased complexity and academic nature of Section 3
conversations or lectures.
B. Guided practice and modeling:
1. Teacher models active listening and critical thinking techniques using a sample
Section 3 recording.
2. Students work in groups to analyze and discuss challenging listening tasks from
Section 3.
3. Identify and discuss effective strategies used by groups to solve the tasks.
VI. Listening Practice - Section 4 (30 minutes)
A. Introduction to Section 4:
1. Explanation of the format and task types.
2. Emphasis on the characteristics of academic lectures and talks in Section 4.
B. Guided practice and modeling:
1. Teacher models active listening and note-taking techniques using a sample Section 4
recording.
2. Conduct a group activity where students listen to a Section 4 recording and summarize
the main points.
3. Compare different summaries and discuss effective note-taking strategies.
VII. Post-Listening Activities (30 minutes)
A. Vocabulary expansion:
1. Teacher provides a list of difficult or unfamiliar words from the listening practice.
2. Students work in pairs or groups to guess the meanings of the words based on context.
3. Discuss the meanings and check with the teacher or dictionary.
B. Reflective writing:
1. Students write a short reflection on their listening strengths and areas for
improvement.
2. Share their reflections in pairs or small groups.
3. Teacher provides feedback and suggestions for improvement.
VIII. Conclusion and Evaluation (10 minutes)
A. Recap of key strategies and techniques learned during the teaching plan.
B. Evaluation: Students complete a self-assessment form, rating their confidence and
progress in listening skills.
C. Q&A session: Address any remaining questions or concerns from students.
Note: The time allocation for each segment can be adjusted based on the needs and pace of
