whichiswrittenin1893,itisoneoftherepresentative
earlyworksofYeats,addressestohisheartgoddess,who
isalsothemostimportantwomaninhislife.
“Whenyouareoldandgrayandfullofsleep,and
noddingbythefire”,thepoetstartswithapencillike
paintingapicturewhichinterlacestheshadowwithlight,
novividcolor,atmosphericbackgroundandlingering
characters’move,onlyaquietlifefabricofoldage.
Althoughatthistime,Yeatswasonly29,hisloverwas
only27yearsold,butthe\"whitehead\",\"Sleepgiddy\",
\"snoozingbythefire\",asimpleimage,butlettime
time,she
lostthecharmingappearance,lostfreshyouth;maybe
thereaderscan\'thelpasking:whatkindofemotionisthe
poetforheratthattime.“Takedownthisbook,and

andmostoftendoeswhenheorsheisoldjustaswhatis
writteninthepoem,beautyisold,theappearanceisgone,
andsheissittingbythefireandstartsreviewingthepast
love.
“Howmanylovedyourmomentsofgladgrace,and
lovedyourbeautywithlovefalseortrue;Butoneman
lovedthepilgrimsoulinyou,andlovedthesorrowsof
yourchangingface”,sincethepoemhasalreadyopened,
thefeelingofthepoethasbeenreadslowly,aftersolong
trial,hecan\'twaittocontrastwithotheradmirer,and
expresshisstrongfeelinginhisheart,whichhasbeen

thememory,facingsocrazyprofession,sheshouldjoyor
grieve?
Thispoemisdeepenedinthefinalsection.“And
bendingdownbesidetheglowingbars,murmur,alittle
sadly”,theshakingfireshinesuponthewithered
appearance;thescreenisvaguewithlightandshade,so
thatreaderscan\'thelpimaginingtheoldwoman’smood.
Isshemourningthefleetingofyouth,orthetwiningof
love?Onceletpoet’feelingburyingintime,thepast
eventsinthetimecan\'tbechased,onlythememoriescan
givesomeconsolations.“Howlovefledandpacedupon
themountainsoverhead,andhidhisfaceamidacrowd
ofstars.”Withthetimegoes,whichtouchedtheold
womansomuch,loveisalsometsubsequentlyslipaway?
No,thereissuchakindoflove,itremains,itisjustnot
beresponded,anditcan\'tfinditshabitats,butitisvery
clingingtosurvive,orsteppingonthemountaintop,or
impalinginthestars.
Thepoet\'slove,isnotaccepted,issweettorment,
time,
theemotionalstreamhascometotheestuarysoftly,
goingtotheocean,andsinkingintothedeepend,whose
ologue,endlessmilesoffaithful
attitude,endlessgrievanceandinjusticeofthepoet,these
y,the
loveasiftheloftyandcoldstarsonthetop,whichhave
theinsurmountabledistance,butneverfailstostareather.
Suchenduringlovemaypuzzlethereaders,theystill
needtopackuptheirheartagainandreturntothereason
saneverlastinganddivinethemeto
love,makingthereaderfeelthegreatlovesuddenly,and
readertobeaffectedbyboth
thesentimentalandtheencouraging,maybethereisa
kindoftruelovewhichisnoneedtoown,however,it
alsotoughexistsandhasbeenaround!
Loveistheentireofthispoem;thewholepoem
usesthesimplelanguagelevel,butifyoureadcarefully,
thereseemstobeamysteriousbreathofstrongwinds.
Theloveandthepersistentofthepoet,thesadorhappy
ofthepoet,nomatterhowourreadersorthetranslators
whomightfeelthefallinloveofthefeelingcannot
ingthispoeminthis
fashion,thenarratorcouldpossiblyhopetoachieve
eitherofthefollowing:thewoman,onceold,will
rememberthedayswhenshewasyoungwithhappiness
butgrowregretfulthatshedidnottakeadvantageofhis
love,orthewoman,inthepresent,willseewhatan
opportunitysheismissingbyignoringhisloveforher
andleavinghimtofadeintothepast.
