millionsofNegroslaveswhohadbeensearedintheflamesof
asajoyousdaybreaktoendthelong
nightofbadcaptivity.
Butonehundredyearslater,
hundredyearslater,thelifeoftheNegroisstillsadlycrippledby
themanaclesofsegregationandthechainsofdiscrimination.
Onehundredyearslater,theNegrolivesonalonelyislandof
hundredyearslater,theNegroisstilllanguishedinthecorners
we’vecomeheretodaytodramatizeashamefulcondition.
Iamnotunmindfulthatsomeofyouhavecomehereoutof
youhavecomefreshfrom
youhavecomefromareaswhereyour
questforfreedomleftyoubatteredbythestormsofpersecution
ebeenthe
uetoworkwiththefaith
thatunearnedsufferingisredemptive.
GobacktoMississippi,gobacktoAlabama,gobacktoSouth
Carolina,gobacktoGeorgia,gobacktoLouisiana,gobackto
theslumsandghettosofournortherncities,knowingthat
ot
wallowinthevalleyofdespair.
Isaytoyoutoday,myfriends,soeventhoughwefacethe
difficultiesoftodayandtomorrow,
dreamdeeplyrootedintheAmericandream.
Ihaveadreamthatonedaythisnationwillriseup,liveupto
thetruemeaningofitscreed:“Weholdthesetruthstobeself-
evident;thatallmenarecreatedequal.”
IhaveadreamthatonedayontheredhillsofGeorgiathe
sonsofformerslavesandthesonsofformerslave-ownerswillbe
abletositdowntogetheratthetableofbrotherhood.
IhaveadreamthatonedayeventhestateofMississippi,a
stateswelteringwiththeheatofinjustice,swelteringwiththe
heatofoppression,willbetransformedintoanoasisoffreedom
andjustice.
Ihaveadreamthatmyfourchildrenwillonedayliveina
nationwheretheywillnotbejudgedbythecoloriftheirskinbut
bythecontentoftheircharacter.
Ihaveadreamtoday.
IhaveadreamthatonedaydowninAlabamawithits
governorhavinghislipsdrippingwiththewordsofinterposition
andnullification,onedayrightdowninAlabamalittleblackboys
andblackgirlswillbeabletojoinhandswithlittlewhiteboysand
whitegirlsassistersandbrothers.
Ihaveadreamtoday.
Ihaveadreamthatonedayeveryvalleyshallbeexalted,
everyhillandmountainshallbemadelow,theroughplaceswill
bemadeplain,andthecrookedplaceswillbemadestraight,and
thegloryoftheLordshallberevealed,andallfleshshallseeit
together.

Whenweletfreedomring,whenweletitringfromevery
villageandeveryhamlet,fromeverystateandeverycity,wewill
beabletospeedupthatdaywhenallofGod’schildren,black
menandwhitemen,JewsandGentiles,ProtestantsandCatholics,
willbeabletojoinhandsandsinginthewordsoftheoldNegro
spiritual,“Freeatlast!freeatlast!thankGodalmighty,weare
freeatlast!”
