As an audience member of an English lecture, I was
impressed by the clear structure and neat layout of the
presentation, which made it easy for viewers to understand and
read. The lecture revolved around a book I recently read, called
“1984,” and explored its themes and messages in depth.
To begin, the speaker gave a brief summary of the book’s
plot and characters. The novel is set in a dystopian society, where
the government controls every aspect of citizens’ lives and
manipulates reality to maintain power. The main character,
Winston, starts to question the Party’s authority and falls in love
with a fellow rebel, which ultimately leads to his downfall.
The speaker then delved into the book’s underlying themes,
such as the dangers of totalitarianism, the power of language, and
the importance of individuality. I particularly appreciated the
discussion on the role of language, which can be used to
manipulate thoughts and emotions and control people’s
perceptions of reality. The concept of “doublethink” was explored,
where citizens are expected to hold two contradictory beliefs

every aspect of citizens’ lives.

highlighted how the government has the power to manipulate an

and themes present in “1984” and how they continue to be
relevant today. It also inspired me to think deeply about the
importance of individuality and the power of language to shape
reality.
